Sit, Breathe. For my whole existence?

What does man do at the end of life when he/she is old, weak and not able to work?
This question came into my mind and I essentially thought, breathe. At that point all the person is doing is just breathing. His/her whole existence has no use besides breathing.

This takes me back to the beginning of life. At the beginning of life, and through life, can man only breathe as their full existence? Why isn't everyone doing this? Just sit and breathe. Okay, we will have to get up to get food. I suppose this is close to what the cave men did with their lives. Aside from the mare breathing, an essential is also to eat, drink.. and breathe. Sit and keep breathing until you are hungry again and you go get food. Oh and somehow, science can't explain this but need to sleep as well. Sleep. So somehow humans went from breathe and keep existing by eating ( of course defecate to keep the process going) to sleep at some point in early early evolution. As we developed from the simple organisms that we were, sleeping become essential in our complex form. We are still on the look out for answers on sleeping. But, back to eat and breathe. So far 3 simple processes, eat sleep, breathe.
Now how did we get to talking, and socialization. Not just create these things but have them become an essential part of a wholesome living. So I guess communication was going to happen somehow sometime. It's needed in survival and well, as intelligent beings, our communication developed drastically overtime and became quite useful. It is puzzling what in our nature contributed to needing human-human interaction. Unlike some other organisms who don't live among each other and survive. And with generations and centuries of years, we have been conditioned to want this human interaction. What was the cause of all this in the beginning. During that cave men age, what in the living conditions or life on earth coerced this situation?
So we evolve slowly adding on essential needs to our nature. Breathe, eat, sleep, socialization, and now today, a Will to live. A --- (reason, definition, "purpose") on our existence. No more simple stuff. Even socialization means you have to get your butt up and go see other people. Put in the effort to interact and connect. Human beings have moved from cave men ages to where we want to say we live for something.
This is where the question comes from. Why is that? I puzzle through this as I reflect on my own why in life. For what? Why did I live if nothing happened? These are the questions I have for anyone who questions my need for purpose in my existence. However, to divert back from the skeptical stand point, why do I feel this way? What is the reason for this need of purpose. Why not just keep doing the simple things I have been doing all along. Breathe, eat, sleep, talk.

I think it has to do with control. As well as competitive nature among humans. But one comes before the other. Or maybe simultaneously. I am not sure. Competition has been there since the beginning where we needed food. Then as necessities such as shelter came along, more competition emerged. And I think now, we are still competing to outdo others using our sole existence to create an impact of some sort that shines light on our existence and makes us be someone in other people's eyes  therefore validating our existence. This validation brings this sense of "need" of our existence. Like we are supposed to be here and you being here did something therefore your life has worth, meaning and purpose. We look for this validation everyday to bring some sense of worth in our existence. So our competitive nature has brought with it drive to do something great and doing something great means your life is worthy and has "meaning".
Control also explains why we want purpose.  Life is generally long and worth living.  You meet crazy things and learn a lot.Through "purpose" we get to define our lives our own selves uniquely to our wants, desires, wishes and visions for life. We are the drivers and when you look at societies where someone else, like a ruler of a small tribe, has taken away the chance for people to drive their own lives, people end up wanting more out of life. Not feeling satistified with the world around them.
This story has to continue at another time and there are certainly multiple factors that contribute to people wanting a purpose in life and human beings being these work-orientated individuals who are always creating and doing.
